Dec. 25 - A 26-year-old male was shot by Milwaukee Police after he charged at officers while wielding a knife.
The incident happened shortly after midnight on December 25, 2009 at a home in the 1800 block of S. 17th St. Uniformed officers from District 2 responded to a domestic violence complaint from a woman at the home. As the woman was calling police, the dispatcher could hear the suspect in the background threatening to kill police when they arrived and the dispatcher advised the responding officers.
When officers arrived at the home, they saw the suspect with the knife through a window. The officers entered the home and within a very small, confined space, the suspect charged at them while wielding a knife. One officer discharged his weapon, striking the suspect in the cheek. His injuries are not believed to be life threatening.
No officers were injured in the incident, nor were two other people inside the home at the time.
The suspect has a lengthy arrest record with the Milwaukee Police Department for drugs, resisting arrest, criminal damage to property, burglary, disorderly conduct and he has been arrested in the past on a fugitive warrant. The suspect is under arrest.
The officer who discharged his weapon is 28 years old with six years of service. He is assigned to District 2.
As is standard operating procedure, the incident is under investigation by the Milwaukee Police Department and the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office, and the officer was placed on administrative duty pending the completion of the investigation. The Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office will make the final determination in the incident.
