Welcome to the 

Milwaukee Police Citizen Academy

The Milwaukee Police Citizen Academy is a ten-week program designed to provide citizens with a working knowledge of the Milwaukee Police Department.

It consists of a series of classes held once a week for three hours. The 30-hour block of instruction will include classroom academics and practical applications in law, police procedure, defense and arrest tactics, firearms training and state of art technology used to combat crime. Tours of various police facilities and demonstrations of equipment will also be conducted. Attendees may participate in a ride-along with officers. 

 

This program will provide citizens an opportunity to ask questions about police services and to express their concerns about quality of life issues. Upon conclusion, citizens completing 80% of the course will participate in a graduation ceremony.

What Is The Purpose/Benefit of The Academy?

The objective of the Milwaukee Police Citizen Academy is to provide Milwaukee citizens with training and experience in the legal and practical principals of policing in the city of Milwaukee. In doing so, the citizen will have a better understanding of how and why police officers perform their duties. The graduated citizen is better able to assist the department in reducing crime and forging positive police and community relations. Thus, enhancing the quality of life in Milwaukee.


Who Can Participate?

Applicants will be subject to a background check and individuals who apply for the Milwaukee Police Citizen Academy must be:

  • At least 21 years of age.
  • A resident of the City of Milwaukee.
  • Have no felony convictions.
  • Have no current criminal charges pending.


Do I Have to Be In Good Physical Shape?

There are no physical requirements. You will not be asked to do anything you do not want or are incapable of doing. You make the decision on your level of participation.


Are There Grades or Homework?

No grades will be kept. No homework will be assigned.


Do I Get to Ride-Along?

A three hour ride-along will be offered during the final weeks of the course.


Is There a Cost Involved?

This is a community service program of the Milwaukee Police Department. There is no fee to participate. However, participants are required to purchase a uniform polo shirt for $20, which they will keep.
