Mayor Barrett Declares August 25, 2004, "Justice Louis Butler Day"

Milwaukee—Mayor Tom Barrett today officially declared Wednesday, August 25, 2004 as "Justice Louis Butler Day" throughout the City of Milwaukee.  The designation recognizes Butler's appointment to the Wisconsin State Supreme Court. 

"Louis Butler has spent thirteen years as a public defender and ten years as a Municipal Court judge in Milwaukee," stated Mayor Barrett. "His passion for equal justice and his commitment to public service will serve him well in the State Supreme Court." 

Louis Butler is the state's first African-American Supreme Court Justice, and was first state public defender to argue a case before the United States Supreme Court.  In April 2002, Louis Butler became the first African-American in the county to win a contested Circuit Court election.
