The 16th Fire Chief for the Milwaukee Fire Department was Sworn in Monday, May 3

On Monday, May 3, the Fire Chief Oath of Office Ceremony for Mark A. Rohlfing took place at City Hall. Rohlfing is the Milwaukee Fire Department’s 16th fire chief and comes to the City with an impressive background. He has been in the fire service for 27 years and spent most of his firefighting career in his hometown Omaha, Nebraska. Most recently, he spent the last two years of his career as fire chief for the Rapid City Department of Fire & Rescue in South Dakota. During his speech at the ceremony, Chief Rohlfing said he believes in three basic principals pertaining to the fire service, 1) prepare, 2) prevent, and 3) protect.

Milwaukee Fire Department and Children’s Service Society of Wisconsin Team Up Again for the
Award-Winning Event Respite On Join Hands Day, a Nationally-Recognized Volunteer Day

The Milwaukee Fire Department (MFD) and Children’s Service Society of Wisconsin (CSSW) teamed up again for the award-winning volunteer event Respite. MFD helped facilitate the event at the Milwaukee Safety Academy on Saturday, May 1, which was also Join Hands Day, a nationally recognized volunteer day. Last year the event was hosted on the same day at the Academy and won the National Join Hands Day Award for outstanding activities. Throughout the day, children were involved in fire-related and non fire-related activities such as real fire demonstrations, arts and crafts, table games, bingo, face painting and much more. They also had the opportunity to see the Exceptional Choir perform, an inspiring group of 40 adults with challenges.

MONTHLY MESSAGE FROM MFD FIRE CHIEF

Be Safe this Fourth of July Season

Everyone loves fireworks! The excitement and emotions they stir up in children and adults alike create lasting memories during the Fourth of July season. However, fireworks can also cause tragic memories when people other than professional pyrotechnicians use them. To remain safe never use fireworks and instead enjoy them during public displays at your local park and other events.

Did you know (according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the Consumer Product Safety Commission) that:

  • approximately 30,100 fires are caused by fireworks each year.
  • approximately 7,000 injuries were caused by fireworks in 2008.
  • seven fireworks-related deaths occurred in 2008.

The NFPA also cites that more fires are reported on the Fourth of July in a typical year than any other day. Fireworks account for half of those fires.

It is important that people celebrate this holiday season the safe way. Fireworks are very dangerous and we urge the public to prevent the risks of devastating burns, fires and even death by not using consumer fireworks.

Sincerely,

 Mark A. Rohlfing

Doctor's Day at the Fire & Police Academy

For over 10 years doctors from the Milwaukee Medical College have participated in Doctor’s Day at the Fire and Police Academy to perform hands-on exercises directly related to firefighting duties. Doctor’s Day this year happened April 15, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., and included 18 doctors who specialized in different areas of medical practice. The doctors were suited in full firefighting gear as well as Hazardous Material suits to take on hands-on exercises. They all worked with the MFD special teams to experience firsthand the type of incidents they respond to and their protocols. The doctors and the MFD team up to host this event every year to give doctors a better understanding of what first responders encounter on scene of an incident.
