Park for Free bike rack program

Using a Federal transportation grant, the Dept. of Public Works has installed more than 2,000 bike racks in business districts, schools and parks around Milwaukee. That means you can park for free when you go out to eat, shop or bike to work!

Although we no longer have a contractor installing racks, we still have about 200 inverted U style racks in stock to replace damaged racks or for new locations.  To request a bike rack, send an email to the City bicycle and pedestrian coordinator.  Include in the email the name and address of the business, a contact person, phone number and the number of bicycles you would ideally like to park.

The racks must be installed on concrete and cannot block the pedestrian way. They should not be installed on hollow walk or heated walk. After the request is emailed, City staff will investigate the site, and contact you with a suggested specific location. After approving a specific site, the City will supply you with a rack, the installation hardware and instructions.  Installation requires a drill, a 3/8 inch masonry bit and a hammer.

If the inverted U style rack will not work for your location, work with the Bicycle and Pedestrian Coordinator to determine a different style rack and manufacturer.  All of our racks have been supplied by Saris Cycling Group in Madison, but there are many other suppliers we can help you contact for specialized bicycle parking needs.

In addition to those racks,  businesses like the City of Milwauee, We Energies, Johnson Controls, Northwestern Mutual, Alterra Coffee and many others provide indoor bicycle parking for their employees who bike to work. Some of the businesses also provide laundry and shower facilities to help encourage their employees to try this fun, healthy, safe and environmentally responsible way to get to work.

Milwaukee also has an ordinance that requires all newly constructed buildings to install bike parking facilities.  Milwaukee also has bike lockers (see the picture below) that allow you to park your bike without removing all your gear and keep it out of the weather.  For more information about lockers or bike racks, contact Dave Schlabowske at 414-286-3144.

Milwaukee DPW recommends there racks for new constructed buildings. The inverted U pictured to the left parks two bikes.  These are the style of rack we have remaining in stock and available on request.
