Dec. 8 - With winter comes snow and ice, which challenges our driving skills each year. The Milwaukee Police Department reminds motorists of some winter driving tips to keep you and your passengers safe.

  • Brush snow and ice from your windows, headlights, and taillights before you drive.

  • Slippery roads shorten stopping distances. Slow down and increase the gap between your car and the one in front of you. Driving a four-wheel-drive car might help with acceleration on a snow packed roads, but will not help stop any faster when sliding.

  • Don’t “pump” anti-lock brakes. If your car is equipped with anti-lock brakes and you find yourself sliding, press firmly on the brake pedal and allow the system to work to stop your car.

  • Don’t take unnecessary chances. Consider delaying your trip until roadway conditions improve.

  • Always wear your seatbelt, and ensure your passengers are properly belted in.

  • If involved in a crash, check for injuries and move the cars from the roadway as soon as possible. Others might not be able to see you in limited visibility, so get to a safe place – like a parking lot – as soon as it is safe to move your car. If you are unable to move your car, do not stand in the roadway.
