City of Milwaukee Health Department to Host Safe Sleep Summit

The Safe Sleep Summit, to be held on May 3, 2010, will involve the leaders from our city’s healthcare institutions, government, businesses, and community and faith-based organizations.  The group will review national, state and local infant mortality data, discuss the relationship between unsafe sleep and infant death, and build consensus for a consistent message on safe sleep.  For information about the problem and how you can keep your baby safe, click here. 


Legionnaire's Outbreak in Southern Milwaukee County

A decorative water wall at Aurora St. Luke's South Shore has been identified as the likely source of infection causing Legionnaire's disease. The infection has affected 8 individuals, who all visited the hospital before becoming ill. Currently, the water wall has been shut down and there is no danger to the public. Recently, there have been news stories about norovirus on cruise ships. Noroviruses are a type of virus that can affect the stomach and intestines. It is sometimes called "stomach flu" (although it has no relation to influenza, which is a respiratory illness).  The infection can quickly spread among large groups of people.  Symptoms of norovirus may include upset stomach, headache, tiredness, diarrhea, fever, chills, vomiting, and stomach cramps. Although norovirus is highly contagious, the infection is usually not serious and only lasts for 1-2 days.  For more information, click here (Para información, cliq aqui.)
