The City of Milwaukee Health Department in partnership with Children’s Community Health Plan, UnitedHealthcare, Community Connect and Abri Health Plan launched Milwaukee’s second annual childhood preparedness campaign by providing approximately 3,000 students with free immunizations and school supplies to assure them a healthier start this school year.

Approximately 12,000 Flood Clean-up Kits Distributed in a Week

The City of Milwaukee Health Department (MHD) has distributed approximately 12,000 flood clean-up kits to residents impacted by the July 22 storm, health officials said Saturday.  It is strongly recommended that residents immediately clean, disinfect and thoroughly dry all areas that floodwater touched within their home to prevent the growth of mold.  Excessive moisture or water indoors promotes mold growth and can cause potential health effects in people with allergies, asthma, and other respiratory complaints.  Click here for more information(Cliq aquí para mas información.)

Common Council President Willie L. Hines, Jr., Alderman Willie Wade, and Commissioner of Health Bevan K. Baker unveiled another forceful campaign to prevent babies from dying in unsafe sleep environments.  Mattresses with stenciled safe sleep messages were placed along Sherman Avenue and on Capitol Drive.

New Smoke-Free Law Still In Effect

The Wisconsin Legislature, in the 2009-2010 Legislative Session, enacted 2009 Wisconsin Act 12, “Wisconsin’s Smoke-Free Law,” which prohibits smoking in all enclosed places that are places of employment or public places effective July 5th, including taverns, restaurants, lodging and retail establishments.  The smoking ban remains in effect, though a measure on enforcement will be revisited by the Milwaukee Common Council.  The City is prepared to receive specific complaints through the City’s Call Center (286-CITY) and E-Services (click here).  Click here for more information.

New Plan Announced to Reduce HIV Transmission in Milwaukee

Commissioner of Health Bevan K. Baker unveiled the city's multi-phased plan to address Milwaukee's high HIV rates by announcing a partnership with Diverse and Resilient, Inc. to help reach young African-American men who have sex with men.  Click here for more information.

Baker unveiled the city’s Men’s Health Center by announcing free resources within the community and partnerships to promote wellness among men and boys. In addition, the City of Milwaukee Health Department (MHD) and community partners announced plans to hold events throughout the entire month of June to recognize Men’s Health Month and encourage males to take advantage of health screenings.
