Community Healthcare Access

About 44 million people in this country have no health insurance, and another 38 million have inadequate health insurance.  This means that nearly one-third of Americans face each day without the security of knowing that, if and when they need it, medical care is available to them and their families.  Having no or inadequate health insurance also often means that people will postpone necessary care and forego preventive care - such as childhood immunizations and routine check-ups-completely.  Because the uninsured and underinsured frequently have no regular doctor and limited access to prescription medications, they are more likely to be hospitalized for health conditions that could have been avoided.

How can the Community Healthcare Access Program help me?

The Community Healthcare Access Program is a vital service offered by the City of Milwaukee Health Department.  Program employees are dedicated to getting community members the health care coverage to which they are entitled, as well as making referrals for clients to receive other important healthcare services.  There are several sites throughout the community at which the health care coverage assistance is offered.  The program also provides translator services in Spanish, Lao, Thai, and Hmong.  A contracted service is used to translate languages other than these so that there are as few barriers as possible to achieving our goal of servicing the entire Milwaukee community.
