The Milwaukee Fire Department has a proud tradition of fundraising for the Muscular Dystrophy Association through an annual "Fill the Boot" campaign. This year's collection drive will run Thursday, August 12 through Saturday, August 14, four hours each day, with August 15 being a rain date.

The Milwaukee Professional Fire Fighters’ Association, Local 215, has been granted permits/permissions from the City Attorney's Office to perform these fundraising activities.

Fundraising will be conducted by on-duty members at the fire stations or on the sidewalk/curb line adjacent to prominent intersections. Companies will remain in-service and in proper uniform at all times. Please stop by your local firehouse and help fill the boot.

The Milwaukee Fire Department partnered with the Milwaukee Public Library for their first Family Fun Night, July 19.  All 13 Milwaukee Public Library locations invited their local fire company to come in and promote literacy and fire safety. Onsite Milwaukee firefighters read the book, "Brecker Bunny Learns to be Careful," the centerpiece of the department's newest fire prevention program aimed at children ages 3-7 titled Brecker Bunny.

MONTHLY MESSAGE FROM MFD FIRE CHIEF

Proper Candle Use in the Home

Each year unattended candles are the result of several home fires across the United States. In a four-year period, 2003-2007, candles were the cause of 15,260 home structure fires across the United States. Annually, it is estimated that fires started by candles result in 166 civilian fire deaths, 1,289 civilian fire injuries, and $450 million in property loss.

The fire service started to see a climb in fires started by candles in the 1990s, and in the 2000s, the candle fire trend began to decline. However, in the last twenty years it has not reverted to the lowest point recorded in 1990.

When candles are in use in the home please use caution. Practice these safety tips and remain fire-safe.

  • Always stay in the room where candles are being burned.
  • Keep lit candles at least one foot away from curtains, mattresses, and anything that can burn.
  • Keep candles, matches and lighters away from children.
  • Use sturdy candleholders that will not tip or burn.
  • Burn candles on sturdy, uncluttered surfaces.
  • Trim candle wicks to one-quarter inch before lighting.
  • When lighting candles, keep your hair and clothing away from the flame.
  • Extinguish candles when they burn to within two inches of their holder.

Sincerely,

 Mark A. Rohlfing

Doctor's Day at the Fire & Police Academy

For over 10 years doctors from the Milwaukee Medical College have participated in Doctor’s Day at the Fire and Police Academy to perform hands-on exercises directly related to firefighting duties. Doctor’s Day this year happened April 15, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., and included 18 doctors who specialized in different areas of medical practice. The doctors were suited in full firefighting gear as well as Hazardous Material suits to take on hands-on exercises. They all worked with the MFD special teams to experience firsthand the type of incidents they respond to and their protocols. The doctors and the MFD team up to host this event every year to give doctors a better understanding of what first responders encounter on scene of an incident.
